Glam it up — and save some bucks — with jewelry

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend even during hard times, but there are other ways to add zing to your wardrobe without zapping your wallet.

Make good use of accessories, especially jewelry, says eBay style director Constance White.
“Statement, attention-getting necklaces look a bit busy, but they can dress up a sheath dress or add bohemian flair to a printed blouse,” she said.

Just take a look at the recent Golden Globe Awards. Beyoncé and other celebs hit the red carpet with bold, collared necklaces or long earrings.

Robin Lindberg, owner of Queen of Heirs Antique & Estate Jewelry in Houston, says when it comes to jewelry, the frugal woman should focus on cleaning out her jewelry drawer.

“Get rid of pieces you no longer wear,” she said. And if it’s outdated, consider giving your pricey pieces an upgrade.

Here are other ideas:

• Plate yellow gold. Have yellow gold pieces you don’t wear plated with rhodium. It’s a safe, inexpensive way to turn yellow gold to white. If you ever want to switch back, it can be undone easily, said Lindberg, who offers the service at about $20-$25 per piece.

• Buy semi-precious colored stones. Then set them in gold or platinum. Colored stones cost less and can make a dramatic fashion statement, Lindberg said. For example, a light-colored citrine easily can resemble a yellow diamond.

• Don’t throw out Grandma’s brooches. Instead, convert them so they can be worn not only as a pin but also as a pendant. Generally, it’s less than $50. Lindberg says to find a jeweler skilled with using a laser. That way your sentimental piece is not damaged.

• Buy a pair of diamond hoops. Studs are so last decade. Diamond hoops are versatile and can be dressed down with jeans or glamorized with the little black dress. (If you’re really frugal, try sterling silver hoops)
