French Jeweler Gives Away Free Diamonds In Japan

It was a quite the scene in Tokyo on Monday when people linked up to get free diamonds. French jeweler Mauboussin gave away .1 carat diamonds in order to drum up attention for their brand. People came from surrounding cities to line up for the promotion. The tiny diamonds are worth about $50 each. The Maboussin flagship Japan store opened in the Ginza shopping area earlier this year but found that they weren't getting a lot of foot traffic because the store's name was basically unknown. Maboussin will make any free diamond into a ring or pendant but that will cost around $500.

An Intimate Wedding Proposal

Dear Whiteflash Sales Team,

I proposed to my now-fiancée this past weekend. It was just the two of us. Casual and intimate. As a surprise, I brought home ice cream from this little ice cream shop that we visited for our first date. We shared ice cream and memories of our first date before I told her I had another surprise for her. That's when I grabbed the ring, got down on my knee, and told her how much I loved her and asked her to marry me!

By the way, my fiancée loves the diamond!

Thanks,
Ken

Diamond Roaring Tiger Watch

The newest men's jewelry timepiece from Swiss Angular Momentum is this Roaring Tiger watch based on the Time Gallery watch case line. The piece is pleasantly subdued, though still embodies the spirit of jewelry timepieces with 1.81 carats of diamonds around the bezel on the 18k pink gold 41.7mm wide case. The mean attraction is of course the high relief engraved tiger - done in an Eastern style and shown roaring against a black Japanese Lacquer dial. The watch is attached to a black alligator strap and gold buckle.

Angular Momentum continues to refine the time disc shown through the aperture window. this time in black with the same stylized font for the numerals. It is not a watch for precision time reading, but use it enough and you can tell the time within a few minutes. Inside is Angular Momentum's standard automatic mechanical movement. It is really another wonderfully artistic watch from the maker who seems to focus on imagining new ways to make luxury watches frames for beautiful art.

Natural-color diamonds hold margins, value

Jewelers looking for a product that sets their store apart and holds its own when it comes to margins might want to try natural-color diamonds, retailers told an audience of hundreds at a breakfast event held on Friday morning during the JCK Las Vegas show.

For the event, titled "The Language of Color," Natural Color Diamond Association (NCDIA) Executive Director Robert May and consultant Diane Warga Arias, of DWA Communications, introduced four retail jeweler panelists, who then spent about an hour sharing stories of selling natural-color diamonds in their stores.

At Wick and Greene Jewelers in Ashville, N.C., owner Michael Greene told the story of a professional athlete who entered his store looking for an anniversary gift for his wife when a display of natural-color diamonds caught his eye.

He gave his a wife a piece showcasing the stones and it was a success, so much so that the wife is now requesting additional natural-color diamond jewelry as a gift to mark the upcoming birth of their first child.

"Natural-color diamonds--they are the ultimate colored gemstones," Greene said.

In addition to being a favorite among customers, natural-color diamonds--unlike colorless diamonds--cannot be shopped on price, Greene said, which allows jewelers to obtain greater margins with these stones.

"There are no Rap lists or other comparative lists for our fancy natural-color diamonds," he said.

"If you sell something that can be compared, the consumer is going to see if there is a better value out there for them," he said.

He sold a customer a five-carat natural fancy yellow diamond ring simply because she fell in the love with the piece and, though she tried, couldn't find anything exactly like it anywhere else.

Natural-color diamonds hold their value--they have doubled in value every 10 years since the 1970s--and have their place in history.

Recently, a 7.03-carat blue diamond sold at Sotheby's set the per-carat record price for a gemstone sold at auction, and some of the world's best-known diamonds are natural-color stones, including the Hope Diamond, the Tiffany Diamond and celebrity-gifted stones, such as singer Jennifer Lopez's pink engagement ring from ex-fiancé Ben Affleck.

The stones also are rare--only one in 10,000 stones that come out of the ground are considered natural-color diamonds.

When asked about how to market natural-color diamonds, retailer Alfredo Molina, of the Phoenix-based Molina Group, said that to sell natural-color diamonds, retailers have to advertise that they carry them.

He said he recently had success advertising a yellow diamond on The Robb Report.

George Walton, of Golden Diamond Co. in Anchorage, Alaska, said that traditional ways of marketing, such as advertising in the newspapers, don't work for natural-color diamonds, just as they don't work for general advertising anymore.

He recommends that retailers "step out of the box" and embrace new forms of advertising when marketing natural-color diamonds.
